Mountain Biking in Bhutan.

Mountain biking in Bhutan is a fairly new sport and is very popular among Bhutanese. The mountainous terrain with changing altitudes gives an adrenaline rush. The cycling in Bhutan routes pass though High Mountain passes with fluttering prayer flags. In September, the Government organizes the Bike race, Tour of the Dragon spanning 256 kms and crossing 4 high mountain passes starting from Bumthang and ending in Thimphu.

Sketch Itinerary for Mountain Biking in Bhutan:

Day 01: Arrive Paro (Altitude: 2280 m):

Meet & Greet at the Paro airport and drive to the hotel.

After lunch, a short ride to Ta Dzong (National Museum), Rinpung Dzong and around Paro valley.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 02: Paro valley – Hike to the Tiger’s Nest & Ride to Thimphu:

After breakfast, we ride to the base of the Tiger’s Nest and hike to the monastery.

After lunch, ride to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong.

In the evening, ride to Thimphu (54 km, approx. 4 hours) passing through the confluence of Paro and Thimphu rivers. The route follows the Valley of Thimphu River through an arid landscape.

After breakfast, ride to Cheri Monastery returning via Kabesa village.

After lunch, ride around Thimphu valley. Ride to Sangaygang view point and ride along the trail to Kuenselphodrang.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 04. Thimphu – Punakha (76 Kms. – 4 hours ride):

After breakfast, ride to Punakha, passing through Dichu La Pass at 3100 m. We continue riding downhill and descent to Metshina. The total descent from Dochu La to Punakha is about 1,800 m.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 05: Punakha – Wangdue Phodrang (1310 m):

We ride to 17th century Punakha Dzong.

Then to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chhorten.

After lunch, ride around the Punakha valley.

Day 06: Wanguephodrang – Gangtey (Altitude 3120 m) (Distance: 67 km, 4 hrs):

Wangdiphodrang Dzong.

After breakfast, ride to Gangtey – 68 kms. Altitude gain 1,800 m.

Afternoon ride around Phobjikha valley.

Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

Day 07: Gangtey –Trongsa (2300 m):

After breakfast, ride to Trongsa (125 km, approx. 6 hours) crossing 3,300 m high Pele La pass en route. From Pele la pass, ride downhill to Chendbji Chhorten at 2,300 m.

After lunch at Chendebji, ride further to Trongsa.

Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

Day 08: Trongsa – Bumthang (Altitude 2800 m):

After breakfast, visit to:

  • Trongsa Dzong and Ta Dzong.

After early lunch, ride to Bumthang (68 km, approx.4.1/2 hours), cross over Yotongla Pass (3,400 m) and then descend to Gyetsa valley (2,700 m). Later cross 2,900 m Kiki la Pass before we reach Jakar.

Day 09: Bumthang (Altitude 2800 m) – Ride around Jakar Valley:

Today, we ride around Jakar valley.

Day 10. Bumthang – Ogyen Choling – Bumthang:

Today we ride to Ogen Choling Palace Museum (40 kms, one way) and in the evening, ride back to Jakar.

On the way, visit to the Mebar Tsho or the Burning lake.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 11. Bumthang – Ura valley – Bumthang (51 kms. 3 hours):

Today we ride to the beautiful valley of Ura (51 kms one way). Explore the valley and visit to the Temple.

In the evening, ride back to Jakar.

Day 12: Bumthang – Flight to Paro:

Chele La Pass

Chele La Pass (3820 m).

After breakfast, drive to the Badbalathang Airport and fly to Paro.

After lunch, ride to Chele La pass (3810 m) – 35 kms ride.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 13: Paro – Departure:

After breakfast, drive to the airport and farewell.
