12 Days Bhutan Trek (Beautiful Laya Gasa Trek) as the name suggests is the most beautiful hiking in Bhutan. This 12 Days Bhutan Trekking trail is an extension of the Jumolhari Trek and offers various flora and fauna. The Trail passes through the Jumolhari base camp passing through the remote Lingshi and Laya village. You will see Takins, Blue Sheep and Blue Poppy, the national flower of Bhutan.

This Trek will give you an opportunity to see a glimpse of the unique culture of the Layap people. These people are nomadic herdsmen of the Himalayas bordering Tibet with a unique dress and culture. The Trek ends at a natural hot spring in Gasa.

12 Days Bhutan Trek Itinerary:

Day 01. Arrive Paro and sightseeing:


Rimpung Dzong.

Our Guide and driver will receive you at the Paro airport and drive you to the Hotel.

After lunch, visit to:

  • The Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum.
  • Paro Rimpung Dzong, the center of civil and religious authority in this valley.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 02. Paro sightseeing – hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery – Shana:

  • A very special day, hike to the spectacular Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
  • On the way, visit Kichu Lhakhang that was built in 659 by the Tibetan King Srongsen Gampo.

Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest).

Lunch will be served at the cafeteria.

After lunch, visit to

  • The Drugyal Dzong built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the seventeenth century.
  • In the evening, drive to Shana.

Day 03. Shana – Thangthangka (Start of Trek):

Altitude: 3610 m; Distance 22 Km; Time 7 – 8 hours, Ascent: 770 m, Descent: 10 m.

Day 04. Thangthangka – Jangothang:

Altitude: 4080 m; Distance 19 Km; Time 5 – 6 hours, 480 m Ascent.

Day 05. Jangothang (Rest day for acclimatization):


Base of Mt. Jomolhari.

We rest at Jangothang today and enjoy the superb view all around.

For Day hikes, you have 3 options on this day at Jangothang.

  1. Hike to Jichu Drake Glacier which is around 3 hours (Back and Forth).
  2. Hike to Jumolhari Glacier which is around 4 ½ hours (Back and forth)
  3. Walk up the mountain between Jumolhari and Jichu Drake, the summit is at 5200 meters with a great view of both the mountains. This is 8 hours (Back and forth).

Day 06. Jangothang – Lingshi:

Camp altitude 4000 m; Distance 17 km; walking time 6 – 7 hours.

Day 07. Lingshi – Chebisa:

Camp site at an altitude of 3880 m; Distance 10 km; Time 5 – 6 hours, Ascent: 280 m, Descent: 410 m.

Day 08. Chebisa – Shomuthang:



Camp at Altitude 4220 m.

Distance17 km; walking time 6-7 hours, Ascent 890 m, Descent 540 m.

Day 09. Shomuthang – Robluthang:

Camp at altitude: 4,160 m.

Distance 18 km; walking time 6 – 7 hours, Ascent 700 m, Descent 760 m.

Day 10. Robluthang – Lemithang:

Camp at altitude 4,140 m.

Distance: 19 km; walking time 6-7 hours, ascent 850 m, descent 870 m.

Day 11. Lemithang – Laya:


On the way to Laya.

Camp at Altitude 3840 m; Distance10 km; Time 4-5hours, Ascent 60 m, Descent 340 m.

Day 12. Laya (Halt):

We have a rest day at Laya and an opportunity to meet the local people.

Day 13. Laya – Koena:

Camp at Altitude 3050 m.

Distance19 km; Time 6-7 hours, 260 m, Ascent, Descent 1070 m.

Day 14. Koena – Gasa Hotspring (End of Trek):

We camp near the Hot Spring a chance for a good hot bath!

Gasa-12 Days Bhutan Trek


Camp at Altitude: 2,638 m; Distance 14 km; Time: 6-7 hours, Ascent 900 m, Descent 1710 m.

Day 15: Gasa Tsachu – Punakha (47 km):

After the breakfast, drive to Punakha.

  • On the way, hike to the scenic Khamsung Yulley Namgyal Choling Monastery (short hike 40 minutes).

After lunch, visit to:

  • The Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and is situated between Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River).
  • In the evening, walk across the longest Suspension bridge in Bhutan (160 m) across Pho Chu River.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 16. Punakha –Thimphu (72 Km):

After breakfast, drive to Thimphu.

  • On the way, visit Chimi Lhakhang or “the Temple of Fertility” built in 1400 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as “The Divine Madman”.

We then visit the Royal Botanical Garden at Lamperi.

After lunch at Dochu La pass (3100 m),


Dochula Pass with its 108 stupas.

Lungchutse hike, 3 hours: This is one of the most rejuvenating and picturesque hikes in the Thimphu region. The Trail starts from Dochula and finishing at Hongtsho village with Lungchutse temple and Trashigang temple visit. The view from the temple is spectacular. You will have a 360° view of the Himalayas including Jumolhari (7314 m), Mt. Masang Gang in Laya, Zongophu Gang and Mt. Gangkhar Puensum (7520 m) the highest peak in Bhutan. The vehicle will pick you up at Hongtsho and drive to Thimphu.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 17. Thimphu sightseeing:


Tallest statue of sitting Buddha in the world (51.5 m).

In the morning, visit to:

  • The National Memorial Chorten (1974) built in honour of our late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
  • The Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
  • The Painting School also called the School of 13 Arts and Crafts.

After lunch, visit to

  • Tallest Statue of Buddha Dordenma in the world (51.5m).
  • Witness Archery Match at Changlimithang stadium.
  • Visit to the Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and the Central Monastic Body.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 18. Thimphu-Paro (Departure):

After breakfast, drive to the airport and farewell.
