Bhutan’s rivers and streams are home to some of the most sought-after freshwater species in the Himalayas. The Golden Mahseer and Chocolate Mahseer, often called the “tigers of the river,” are renowned for their power and are found in the deep, fast-flowing waters of southern Bhutan. In the higher altitudes of central and northern Bhutan, anglers can also encounter Brown Trout and Snow Trout in crystal-clear alpine rivers and pristine mountain streams.

Prime Target Spices

1. Golden Mahseer & Chocolate Mahseer

Known as the “tigers of the river,” these prized freshwater fish are incredibly strong fighters. They are found in the pristine, deep-flowing waters of southern Bhutan.

2. Brown Trout & Snow Trout

Found in the crystal-clear alpine rivers and streams of central and northern Bhutan.

Best Times

• Spring (March to May): The pre-monsoon season brings the lowest river flows. It is the absolute best time for trout fishing in the high valleys and for targeting migrating Mahseer.

• Autumn (September to November): The post-monsoon season offers crystal-clear skies and great fishing conditions as the Mahseer migrate downstream.

• Note: Fishing is strictly prohibited during the summer monsoon (June–August) and the trout spawning season (October–December)
